Sustainability at the TUI Marathon Palma de Mallorca
The sustainability concept for the TUI Marathon described below is oriented to the “Green Champions” guide for environmentally-friendly major sports events which was issued by the German Federal Ministry of Environment, Nature Protection and Reactor Safety and the German Olympic Sports Association.

Our vision for the Marathon is to be “the most beautiful island marathon in the world”. Our guiding principle is to “preserve the beauty of the island”. This results in a direct responsibility to the island of Majorca. In addition to the central task of keeping the environmental burdens connected with the event to a minimum, TUI also takes on a social responsibility under the sustainability concept.

TUI helps to protect the environment…
- with a fixed amount for each Majorca flight which is paid towards the TUI Forest on Majorca.
Furthermore, TUI doubles every tree donation by customers for the TUI Forest.
- by using advertising (flyers, programme leaflets) made 100% of recycled paper
- by deploying cleaning staff and ensuring the rapid removal and sorting of refuse dropped on and
around the route
- use of locally produced food
- high proportion of vegetarian meals
- low-waste approach to promotional gifts
- contractual obligation of exhibitors to avoid and sort refuse with
environmental refuse disposal.
- by providing an adequate number of bicycle parking spaces and a bus shuttle service from and back to the hotels
TUI Marathon partner make their contribution…
- by providing runner bags, crew and finisher shirts made of ecological and recyclable raw materials
=> crew and finisher shirts made of bamboo from Pearl Izumi
=> crew caps made of RE PET from Pearl Izumi. Through the reprocessing of PET bottles they are 100% recyclable.
=> runner bags of 100 % cotton from Pearl Izumi
- the water supplied by Water Gallery is from the Font Sorda spring on the Majorcan estate of Son Cocó.
- through the use free of charge of public transport => IME /EMT
- use of electric golf buggies => Marriott
TUI encourages its guests to be active themselves…
- by giving our customers the opportunity to make a voluntary donation to offset the CO2 emissions caused by their flight to Majorca. Through the TUI Climate Initiative guests of TUI Deutschland can offset the CO2 emissions of their entire holiday. From a minimum donation of €2 TUI makes an additional contribution. You can find all the information about the TUI Climate Initiative and your carbon balance sheet on holiday at www.tui-klimainitiative.de.
- by offering creative solutions for offsetting. When they use their TUI Card TUI customers are connected to the Bonitos bonus programme. Since 2009 it has been possible to swap collected bonus points to support a climate project. The project is coordinated by the Swiss Foundation myclimate and contributes towards reducing CO2 emissions and protecting the climate. Bonitos can also be invested in trees in the TUI Forest on Majorca.

As a globally active company group TUI is aware of its responsibility towards society. As the organiser of the biggest international sports event on Majorca we believe it is our duty to make our contribution as a “Corporate Citizen”. TUI therefore engages with and involves various foundations in the Marathon. In reflection of the runners participating from various countries we decided to support the following charitable organisations:
TUI Marathon Palma de Mallorca supports the Peter Maffay Foundation

When registering, participants can make a donation to help traumatised children
“Children cannot choose the circumstances into which they are born. We help children
who are suffering hardship. Please help too”.
Peter Maffay
With the UNICEF Kids Run held in connection with the TUI Marathon we have found an ideal opportunity to link our engagement on the island with Germany. On 16 October 2010 the “Tabaluga Children” can take part in the Kids Run with their own starting number.
At the same time we give the children the opportunity to help children in Africa on the sporting front.
Working together we want to bring back a smile to the faces of many more children. For more information: www.petermaffaystiftung.de
The Peter Maffay Foundation was established in 2000 by its name-giver Peter Maffay. Every year it enables up to 300 children and young people to enjoy an active holiday at the Finca Ca`n Lombart in the north of Majorca, accompanied by the people who look after them. During these holidays the children come into direct contact with nature, they help to feed animals and gain an insight into the production processes of bread and cheese. In short, they win back a piece of normality and freedom.
TUI has been a strong supporter of the therapeutic children’s finca since 2003 and supports the work of the foundation by providing free flights for the children.

TUI Marathon supports the Family Holiday Association
Participants from the UK can help disadvantaged families to enjoy a holiday when they book a travel package.
 |
|
This year the Family Holiday Association is the partner organisation of the TUI Marathon Palma de Mallorca for the British market. Our sports tour operator in the UK Thomson Sport has produced travel packages in cooperation with the Family Holiday Association, linked with a charitable donation initiative. In addition, Thomson Sport in conjunction with the Family Holiday Association offers the opportunity to collect money for the charitable cause with great package offers. We offer you the opportunity to offset donations above £200 against your Marathon package holiday. You therefore have every good reason to take part in the FHA Marathon programme. We want to work together to ensure that more disadvantaged families get the opportunity to enjoy a holiday. You can find out more about the Family Holiday Association at www.fhaonline.org.uk.

UNICEF Mallorca
Running for a good cause: the money from the Unicef Kids Run combats the lack of water in Niger “Children from the North run for children in the South” under this motto TUI and UNICEF are providing a starting place on 16 October for 2,000 children in the Unicef Kids Run, which takes place in connection with the TUI Marathon Palma de Mallorca.
In addition to the fun from running, the good cause stands in the forefront: For each child participating TUI will donate five euros to the Unicef aid project “Water for Niger every drop counts”, which will improve the conditions of life for children in the region.
TUI has been working in conjunction with UNICEF Majorca on the TUI Marathon Palma de Mallorca since 2008. After the successful start in the first year TUI handed over the title sponsorship of the Kids Run to the charity in 2009. The donation amount for the African country was rounded up to 10,000 euros.
